How can I heal a very stubborn 'pressure area. It just the first layer skin now. grandma got this a year ago while hospitalized after a hip break. It was actually open and draining. With the Home health nurse help we got all that cleared up and the skin was pink but that only lasted a few weeks and now it's red and very tender. It on her bottom just at the top of her buttocks. She stays dry and while in bed she on her side most the time. She does sit up in her wc usually all day. I always cover it when we go out in case she does get wet. I've put everything I know on it.

you have gotten some real good advice... I would encourage you to ask her Dr or nurse what their best advice is. If it is red and draining she may need an antibiotic. Keep it clean and dry... years ago we used tincture of benzion but now I am sure there are other things. take care and God bless, J

When she is in a wc get one of those air pads or better a water cushion or sheep skin and do not let her sit more than 2 hrs at a time if she can stand have her stand up for a time and then sit back-you might have to try different products most hospitals have outpt. wound care if something is going to work you can see results pretty quickley

Tasha~As pointed out-pressure sores or bed sores can be dangerous, and it is a very good idea to move your Grandmother every few hours, as Carol suggested--I like the reply from Ed and think you can get some good ideas on how to handle the situation online. You can always consult with your area agency on aging to get some recommendations.

Good Luck to you!

My mom developed a bed sore last November. We got something called DuoDerm, recommended by her Doctor, and it cleared it right up. It's a medicated patch that you put on the sore to keep it from becomming wet. It worked wonderfully. I got it from a Medical Supply company.

I'd send you a link but the website will delete it but you can google it to read about it.

Hope this helps.

BLESSED:

Baby, make a habit of Googling everything, like "coping with bed sores" or "pressure sores." It'll connect you with links where you can get the answers to just about anything. If I give you some links, they'll be deleted as it seems I'm advertising -- which isn't allowed in this forum.

Also, have you ever thought of letting air get to these sores instead of keeping them covered all the time? In my experience, air exposure helps them heal a lot quicker. Your grandma might be showing her booty a little bit, but believe me she'll be grateful.

Always at your service,

-- ED

Moving her off it every two hours; keep it clean and dry (except for medication the doc gives you for it); while in bed make sure she turns over every 2 hours; message around the area (not on the area) gently to help get the circulation going. Make sure is well hydrated - sipping on water through out the day. Lastly, make sure she can't get her hand down there to it and scratch it. I'm a retired RN, having worked in a nursing home for a long time, and these worked for us. Hope this helps.

These pressure sores can be very dangerous. I'd ask a doctor about a prescribed cream that may help. You are doing your best, but if it's getting worse, it's time for medical help.
