Read it carefully to see if it's dependent on declaration of incompetency from doctors.

What are the reasons you want to begin using it? Is this for the person you're caring for who has dementia?

I was financial Power of Attorney for my Dad... I started to notice at his house that he was throwing away current bills that needed to be paid. I asked the caregiver to keep a watch on that, she would dig through all the wastebaskets and save the bills for me.

It was then that I asked my Dad would me mind if I helped him with paying his bills. Since he was throwing away current bills, I just had all the bills sent to my own home address, thus Dad never noticed no bills were coming to his house.

I also had Dad set up his savings and checking account to include my name so I could sign his checks for the bills. That worked great.

I had Durable Power of Attorney for my mom, both medical and financial. My mothers was written such that a determination of incompetency was not needed. My situation worked much liked FreqFlyers - except I took over right after my father passed. For over a year prior to my dad passing he and I did the financial stuff together - which really was me doing it but he signed the checks. My father had always taken care of these things while my parents were married and my mother was neither able or wanting to do it upon dads death.
