I live in Fairfax County and I am in need of temporary help with yard maintenance. I need temporary help with grass cutting - immediately through July - due to a medical event.

According to your profile, you only need someone to cut the grass on a one-time only basis. For this, I wouldn't even try to get a commercial lawn service, as they're generally looking for full summer commitments.

I recently had to hire a lawn service contractor; out of 10 calls, 1 said he couldn't handle another commitment as he was too busy. One showed up and accepted the job. Of the others, none of them called back or came up to give an estimate.

Lawn service contractors can be very picky; they want full summer commitments, and they want to stay in a certain area.

You might try contacting the Fairfax County Senior Services and ask if they have lists of people who help seniors. Your local city may also have a Senior Center that could provide names of lawn mowers. In addition, it's been my experience that some communities have contractors which they hire directly to perform various services for abandoned and vacant buildings. The code enforcement or similar department may be able to help.

If worse comes to worst, you could post an ad on Craigs List or just put a "help wanted one lawn mowing only" sign in your yard. I wouldn't do that generally though because of the liability issue, but if you're desperate that might be the only solution.

I would try your city though; they might even provide someone to mow the lawn for a nominal fee just to avoid going through the citation process when the grass grows too high.

I find that the best place to look is the local Facebook pages. We have garage sale Facebook pages. Ask where you can find someone that can mow.

Cookie, the way the weather has been here in northern Virginia with the nice rain falls, my lawn needs to be cut every week.... it won't be easy to find one contractor that will want to mow just once, but might mow every week for a couple of months.

Non-contractual mowings, could be between $50 to $100 depending on the size of your yard. I pay $40 for .25/acre mowing/edging/grass blowing. If a mowing contractor be sure the person is licensed and bonded.

Gone are the days when high school boys use to go door to door to see if you wanted the lawn mowed for $1.00.

Angie's List. Or ask your neighbors what service they use.
