I am not sure if even the Drs and Nurses fully understand how behavior drugs work. Some were actually manufactured for other illnesses and found they worked for others too. And every drug works different on every person. Sometimes its a hit and miss until the right "cocktail" is found. My daughter is a RN. She says it can take a month before they know if a drug works. If not, a new drug is tried...there goes another month.

With ALZ/Dementia some meds for cognitive function no longer work after a certain point. People get resistant to drugs. I will tell you, I would never use a GP/PCP to care for my Dementia. They know a little about everything, and a lot about nothing. You need Neurologist. You may want to see a Neuropsychiatrist.

What kind of support are u looking for? People in the same position of you to talk to or the need to have some take over some of the caring?

Welcome, Bill.

With my mom, with dementia, we got the best advice and meds from geriatric psychiatrists.

As we learned after Columbine, drugs work differently on teens than on adults, and I suspect they are also metabolized differently in elders as well. (Goodness knows, my mother's non-psychiatric meds didn't work on her after a while.)

It might be a murky bit of science to try to get definitive answers, but I have recently heard of genetic testing to determine which psychotropics would work better on individuals than others. It might be worth asking a psychiatrist.
