Both of my parents live at home, with me living next door. I have a caregiver help me 5 hours a day, five days a week, helping them shower and get breakfast and lunch. However, they are beginning to need more care in the evenings and during the night. Both are suffering from varying levels of dementia. Additionally, one of them is suffering from Parkinson's Disease.
I am having their basement converted to a semi-private living area so that we can hire someone to live with them. That would allow me to travel occasionally and go out for an evening. Ideally, the person would exchange room for care. Any suggestions? How would I go about finding someone like this?

You have to pay the person a full salary at at least minimum wage for all hours worked, you can’t exchange room for care. The room is part of their compensation. You can try finding someone through word of mouth, websites, advertising on Craigslist. Just make sure you perform a background & reference check.

Would I pay them for any moment they are in the house? Really, I just need someone there in case they fall and to remind them to take their medications. I would still have someone else in the house during the day Monday through Friday. Also, if you must pay them at least minimum wage, would you then charge them going rate for apartment rental?

First of all, I am so sorry that you are struggling with this situation.

It’s devastating watching parents decline.

My mom has Parkinson’s disease so I know how hard it is to witness this firsthand.

Supplying housing isn’t going to cover all costs. Your employee will still require a salary.

What are you looking for? Someone with experience? Or perhaps a recent grad student? They would appreciate your offer of housing.

Everyone needs some time off or they will burn out. How will you handle that?

Please be safe. Do a complete background check on your employee.

Run an ad. Also check with universities for prospective employees. Check ads that offer help for seniors

Best wishes to you.

You have to pay them minimum wage for any time they are responsible for falls, medications, companionship, etc. You cannot charge them rent and for Their food.

Some foreign grad students will accept the arrangement you are suggesting. As part of their student visa they were supposed to make arrangements to pay their expenses before they arrive. Your arrangement could jeopardize their visa status.

With foreign students. Their may be language and cultural barriers with Your parents. You would also need to do background checks.
