My mom's moods change just like that. She will say, "Are you taking me home? I will say we are waiting for Jamie (my sister) to run you home. She will be here in a few minutes. She gets mad and paces the floor. Well where is she? I don't know how to handle that.

Many people here are skilled in the ‘therapeutic fib’. Examples include:

-You can’t go home until the doctors say you can.

-You can’t go home right now. An exterminator came by and it’s not safe to breathe in the spray they used.

-We have to wait. I got the carpets cleaned and they need to dry.

-Jamie can’t come get you. She has car trouble.

-Your room here is already paid for. It would be wasting money if you left today.

The list is endless!

If this is happening in the afternoons, it's called Sundowning and is a very common behavior of dementia. Engaging with our LOs who have cognitive decline goes more smoothly when we are as informed about their condition as we can be, and research strategies (like you're doing here on this forum). I've learned a lot from watching Teepa Snow videos on YouTube. She's a professional who's been educating on this topic for many years now, and I like her style, which is positive and lively.

Be more vague -- "Pretty soon."

Better yet, you tell her she is home.
