My dad uses a bedside commode for #2 only and a bottle for urine. I feel like we have a good handle on the urine stink from his soiled incontinence pants and the urinal, but for the life of me I can't find a way to prevent the entire house stinking to high heaven when he poops. It's not sitting there or anything. We clean up immediately. The house is just permeated with a horrible stench for hours after and it lingers. I am at a loss, but it smells soooooo gross.
I can't use febreeze. Candles just make it smells lke candles and poop.
His #2 just is overwhelmingly stenchy. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

For now, put bowls of vinegar around. I had the problem getting the smell out of Moms bathroom after she had a BIG accident. A friend recommended bowls of vineger. For me, they worked.

You can use an exhaust fan framed to be placed in the room's window to push the smells outside. I place about a half inch of pine-sol treated water in the bottom of the bucket after cleaning.

Granted that nobody's business actually smells like roses, if you're cleaning away promptly things shouldn't be as bad as all that. So it does sound as if either you are unusually sensitive to the smell (doubt it!) or maybe there is something wrong with your father's digestion. Any known problems? Has it been investigated?

Just as one example, I recall that Coeliac disease can be diagnosed from "foul-smelling, fatty stool" - so I'm thinking you could do worse than put a peg on your nose, take a sample, and get it down to his PCP for analysis.

Activated carbon is what you need. The reactive surface binds the odorous molecules. Everything else just masks the poop odor with something that smells more. In your dad's room, have a air filter with an activated charcoal filter. That should take care of much of it. In addition have activated charcoal filter on your HVAC unit. That will take care of any odors that escape. In the commode itself, put a shot glass or so of activated charcoal in there. I did all these things when grandma was still using her commode, most the of the time I didn't smell a thing.

This is from a poster named "SouthernGirl" from Augusr 2012:
"Aug 2012
I stumbled on something to freshen up my mom's bedside potty, and I find it works quite well. I put mint mouthwash (Listerene) in her potty after emptying and cleaning. It leaves her room smelling minty, and doesn't smell like a "cover-up" like some candles and room spray tend to do."
