My husband never signed up for SS or Medicare. He is, of course, in poor health and failing. In the event of a crisis, he has ZERO coverage. How can I get him signed up?
The answer from freqflyer is correct as to one way to sign up for Medicare but given the odd timing I would suggest making an appointment at your local senior center to see a SHIP counselor, a free service of the Medicare bureaucracy. There sounds like there are some other things going on here (e.g., is he even eligible for so-called "free" Part A of Medicare?; did he get creditable insurance from an employer until recently?; and so forth)
(In addition it's kind of irrelevant to this topic but it is not correct that a person "can sign up for SS any time after their 65th birthday." A person can sign up for SS anytime after his or her 62cnd birthday. Age 65 is meaningful to Medicare but not to SS; so-called full SS retirement age is now 66 and rising.)
Curious, why your husband never signed up for Medicare when he turned 65? As for Social Security, one can sign up for SS any time after their 65th birthday. The longer one waits, the higher the SS amount one would receive... but since your husband didn't sign up for Medicare at 65, he will probably be paying a much higher rate than the rest of us who did sign up at 65... so it will all even out.
If he is in poor health, how is he currently paying for any type of doctor care? Or is he just not going to any doctors? Some guys are like that :P
