Your mother is falling at night, becuase she wants to get up and walk. Unfortunately, her constant falls are taking a toll on her personally. It could be a UTI, ministrokes, or is prone to falls. Next time it happens, call an ambulance and ring and tell your family she has gone to hospital. If they abuse you, they need to come and help share the load of looking after your mom. All the best, Arlene Hutcheon

Low blood pressure? Had this problem myself - had been taking medication for high blood pressure for years and everything was good. Had some sudden falls - went to doctor who checked and found the medication that had worked fine for years was now too strong. So, low blood pressure. Adjusted medication and am fine.

In my situation, it turned out due to CHF mom was taking diuretics. So in addition to draining fluid, they also deplete certain nutrients, the main culprit being your potassium. This was causing my mother's blood pressure to drop suddenly and pass out. She has a monitor for her defibrillator and her cardio called to say take her to the ER asap. It zapped her 7 times that night. Once at the hospital, is finding out about her potassium. So I asked the doctors what is the hardship increasing her potassium and that I shouldn't have to go to med school to make that determination. They tripled her intake and she has been fine since.

Thanks for this info, commutergirl. My Mom has fallen twice in the last few days after coming home from the hospital on diuretics for CHF. I’m taking her for blood work in a few days so we’ll see if the diuretic is disrupting her electrolytes and contributing to her falls.

I’m so sorry to hear what you are going through. My 91yo Mom has begun falling. She has balance issues due to cervical spine pressing the nerves which affect her balance. She refuses to use her walker or a cane. Talk about stubborn. What concerns me is she is losing control or her bladder after falling. That is not a good sign and would certainly warrant a visit to ER or her Primary Care doctor. Good luck.

Gosh--
This thread popped up out of nowhere! It's 4 years old!

Mother rehabbed OK, not great. She eventually accepted that she will never walk with just a cane ever again. Her PCP took her off ALL pain meds, except for Tylenol and oddly enough, after 50+ years of opioid addiction--she stopped falling. She also stopped complaining non stop about being in pain.

She didn't get the 2nd hip done and never will, she's 88 now, far more fragile that she was and no dr will do the 2nd hip. She is really pretty much housebound and although she CAN walk, she certainly limits herself to doing only so much and then her day is over.

She has her up days and down. Defintiely much worse overall than 4 years ago. I don't know what keeps her hanging in there.

IF you can get you LO to do the PT everyday--you will have a better long range outcome. Mother refused and pretty soon she was baseline weak again.

In the end, as long as our LOs are considered able to make their own decisions, we have to let them.

It's a four year old thread a common problem. I the regular pt and exercise has to be emphasized to those that are capable. And medical professionals must tell the patient as a doctor or nurse. People can try to sell the benefits of pt along with things like nutrition forever trying to convince a senior who is from a generation that was led to believe there is/was a pill or procedure for everything which is not the case. They have to work on their health and fitness daily.

I've seen people who work at get results and witnessed people who don't deteriorate or make no progress accepting old age they way their parents and family did 50 years ago.
