Hello All,

My name is Nancy and I would like to ask if anyone has created a poster for their loved one's hospital room. My mom had a stroke on Easter. Her left brain was effected and the right side is not moving at all. This has been a long 12 months for me. My husband had a stroke, gran Mal seizure, and multiple brain bleeds in March 2021, my dad had a stroke October 2021 and now my mom. My mom is the one who lost all control of her right side. I wanted to put a poster in her covelescent room with family photos and information for her to talk about with staff. I want to keep her mind sharp. Her brain is fine with minimal problems. Slower thought process is the most notable.

Has anyone done this? So far I only find funeral posters. Thanks for your help.

Hi Nancy, what a good idea.

I would handle this by purchasing a cork board, then affixing your staff suggestions and pictures in that so that it can be continually updated.

I also think that's a great idea.   We didn't have a poster, but for my mother, we had a large oversized (about 3' in height) calendar and we marked off each day when we came.   I think we attached photos to it but I don't recall.  I may have used rubber stamps of cats and dogs to decorate it.  Photos from magazines could work as well.

By the time the rehab route became necessary for my father, a cousin got a corkboard, double sided tape and we attached all the get well cards he received.  Sometimes the tape wore out, so we used push pins.

It was quite a hit with Dad, his friends who visited, and rehab staff.

I have done lots of crafts with posters and never even saw one of those.
If they exist my nurse-friends would have just LOVED to find one of those for MY room when I battled the big C. They were of a perverse nature!
There are lots of posters online for those who dare to say the word "amazon". They are easily mounted; check with the nurses first. You will find wall-safe mouthing material there as well. Everything comes in all sizes.
It's a lovely idea. As a nurse I saw all sorts of decorations go up.
I sure wish your Mom good luck. I hope she has great rehab. The things that come back easily in the first Month as the swelling goes down are easy come, but the rest has to be worked at. When Mom is in rehab ask to attend a session with PT and with OT. It is informative and helpful.
I sure do wish you all the very best.

I suggest the "One Page Profile" which is currently in vogue with advocates of person-centred care.

You can find them explained here: https://www.scie.org.uk/person-centred-care/one-page-profile/what-is

I'd better do a bit of expectations management here: family photos, especially of her doing interesting stuff, are a very good idea, as are favourite books, pictures generally, objects associated with some important part of her life. My wonderful service, which I am immensely proud of and whose people I couldn't admire more, had the concept of one page profiles suggested to them by somebody or other, can't think who, and has taken it on board. In a way. Sigh...

The thing is, for this to work as well as in our dreams, the person seeing the poster, reading the profile, connecting with your mother as an individual in some other way has to - not be on the same wavelength exactly, but at least *have* wavelengths which at some point overlap with your mother's. So do pick things which have pretty much universal appeal and don't diverge *too* widely from whatever the staff member is likely to be supporting her with.

This morning's prize went to my first client, one I hadn't met before. On top of her wardrobe I spotted a lovely photo of her on a certificate for "Best Dressed Lady" (from a golf club, I think it was). She is very very deaf so I wasn't able to ask her about it at the time but tomorrow I'll include it in her dressing routine.

PS, what I have against posters is that they don't get read. Not unless they're on the back of the bathroom door while the staff member is allowing your mother privacy, and even then she's more likely to be checking her rota or asleep on her feet.

I created poster sized prints using walgreens photo account for my father's memory care room. You can make collages using the walgreens software or like me you csn create a large collage image with other software on your PC and just upload the image for printing. As I remember the large prints were of excellent quality and cost about $10 each.

BTW: I have also constructed collages of vacations and wedding pics which I have given as gifts _and_ the family still displays many of them so I know they were really appreciated. So many pics are resigned to a closed photo album: making a collage from 8x10 to 30x42 allows photos to be displayed!
