I'm not sure this is the correct area to put this, but I'm looking for answers. I am in a bit of a quandary because I have two parents that are not well and I've been dealing with their affairs for some time. My father is in assisted living, so his situation is solved, however I had to take my mother into my home. She is a dialysis patient, which adds a little more complication to the situation. My husband and I have two vacations planned and the bigger quandary is I want to stay married, so not going isn't really in the cards, however I have to work this out. Both my husband and I work very hard and of course when you add caregiving to the situation, it makes things tough....there really is no sense of privacy any longer. I need to find respite care for my mother for roughly five days and two of those days would be dialysis. There is really no family I can count on and the last thing I want to do is put my email and phone number on a website because the last time I did they liked to kill me with calls! I can't find much through their county, so just wondering if anyone has any suggestions of how they might have solved this. My preference would be an assisted living situation.

Is there a reason that Mom can't go to the AL where your dad is?

Most AL's that I've known have kept some short term room, nicely decorated and set up; sometimes they are used for patients who are "thinking about" moving in; sometimes they are used for respite.

They haven't had room at the facility he's in because that was a thought. I will check them again though.

I seems to me you really only have two choices, find an AL that has space available (and many are booked months in advance) or hire caregivers through a reputable agency.

Problem is partially solved....thanks for the help. I called the lady at the ALF my father is at and she believes that she can keep a bed available for my mother. Just have to work on the transportation to the dialysis facilities.

Nursing homes do respite too. The AL Mom was in married couples shared a room. The rooms came in different sizes.
