I am a DAV and went to the main hospital in Atlanta. Both times I had an appointment,. Its about 100+ miles each way. Being 74 its a hard drive for me especially in the busy Atlanta traffic. Both times I was denied travel expenses which has never happened before. Why?

Hi, I'm familiar with the travel vouchers given by VA but I don't know exactly what the rules are to qualify for travel assistance money. I suggest that you, or someone in your family, go on to the VA website and find a phone number for the travel assistance office and give them a call. They would be more likely to help answer this question than anyone here. Good luck.

Did you fill out all the right VA forms - particularly the one that they issue to show you were there?

There are a couple of possibilities here. One possibility is that a new VA clinic may have opened closer to where you live, and the VA feels that you should utilize that location rather than collect travel expenses for the more distant hospital.

The other possibility is that your income situation may have improved, thereby making you ineligible for travel expenses.

It is hard to understand why the VA would arbitrarily withhold your travel expenses unless one of the above situations exists. The VA provides a patient advocate that can look into your case and get the answer that you need. Call your local VA Center and ask for the name and phone number of the Patient Advocate.

I forgot about the Patient Advocates… that's an excellent idea to get in touch with one and have them help you. They are very knowledgeable and their entire job is to assist you in obtaining services you are entitled to from VA.

What is the VA rating? You need to be rated 30% and above for service connected disability to receive travel.

Mymares, I don't know about that. My father is 10% and he does qualify and has received travel vouchers.

That can also depend on income too, hardships can qualify too if you fill in paperwork for them. For C&P exams the VA always pay for travel even if you dont have a rating. It has been 30% since I started dealing with them a few years ago.. But I know if individuals qualify for special circumstances they can get it, but you have to ask and do the paperwork, the VA does not just give!.. But as the OP stated they had gotten the travel before. maybe a clerical error?
