My husband was hospitalized and very ill. Has anyone experienced this problem before? He was very confessed and lethargic. Could not recognize family members. Could not walk or talk. Doing somewhat better today not as comatose looking. Still waiting on the doctors to tell me something.

Find Care & Housing
Upallnight as you have realized your husband is seriously and could and I repeat could not is in the final stages of his dementia but you have him in a hospital which is the correct place until you know what is going on.
Low sodium can be caused by psychiatric drugs and those given for seizure, you mentioned seroquil and depakote which are also used in people with dementia to calm their behaviour. Adisons disease can also cause low sodium as does water intoxication. From a previous post I noted not passing urine which of course would cause water retention and would indicate kidney failure which can lead to death.
The Dr should have test results and depending on his and your wishes will proceed from there. They can reverse a lot of problems with IV fluids and if he continues not to urinate may consider dialysis if his condition warrents it. They may recommend or you may desire agressive treatment or they may suggest you take him home and have hospice come in and keep him comfortable for whatever time he may have left. This is a very difficult time for you and I hope you have support close by. What I am saying should not be taken too literally because I do not know the exact circumstance or the course of his illness but I send you my prayers to help you through whatever may transpire. Blessings.

yes he is passing urine. He is on liquid diet, IVs, and catheter. No new activity on his ct and spine is ok. They are going to give him physical therapy to get him stronger. I cannot take care of him here if he cannot get up to the bathroom. He is not even feeding himself. He is weaker today then yesterday. Thank you all for your support.

Have they ever checked the pressure of fluid in his brain to rule out normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH)? That can cause the dementia symptoms he's shown, since it sounds like they don't think it's Alzheimers from another post you did.

I have no idea about the sodium levels...I'm sorry you have to go through this, but agree that you need to do the best you can to take care of yourself through all of this.

It sounds as though everything is under as much control as it can be at this point. Passing urine is a good sign. At least he is not in renal failure. They have probably corrected the low sodium now with the IVs. The fact that he is able to eat even if he is so weak he has to be fed is again a good sign. When he is strong enough he will probably be transfered to rehab and then you can decide if you are able to manage his care at home. It is a very difficult time for you but don't let them bully you into taking him home if you can't or don't want to take care of him. He is and has been very seriously ill and even without the dementia there would be a long recovery but it is likely to make the dementia worse. So think very carefully about what is best for both of you and don't be pushed into something you can't manage. you must already be pretty tired from coping with the dementia for a long time so this may be the time some changes have to be made. You must take care of yourself first. Blessings. Come back and many people will be able to help you through this difficult time.

Im thinking the years of epilepsy and seizure falls to his head has been the source of his dementia. He also was very ill about 7 years ago after infections from surgery. He never really bounced back from that either. Its been a long weary journey.
