I promise I will stop asking this questions hehe, I just have a few more...
The order says:
Percocet Tablet 5-325 MG
Give 1 tablet by mouth every 4 hours as needed for pain: 1-5/10 on pain scale of 0-10/10 DNE 3GM. Acetaminophen from all sources w/in 24 hrs.
I googled it in a thousand different ways and I couldn't get an useful answer. What is the meaning of DNE 3G in this context?
As Gustavo Cerati once said: ¡¡Gracias totales!!
When a person states that they are having pain, you can give 1 tablet by mouth every 4 hours within a 24 hour period. The person complaining of pain has to rate the pain on a numbered (0 to 10) pain scale with the pain being between 1 and 5. The pain scale numbers indicate that 0 equals NO PAIN and 10 equals EXTREME PAIN. One of the more common pain scales has a series of numbered cartoon faces moving from 0 (smiling and pain-free) to 10 (weeping in agony.) The doctor or nurse then asks a person in pain which face matched up with how they were feeling or how much pain they are experiencing.
Do not exceed 3 GM or 3000 mg in 24 hours. The person is not to take more than 3 GM or 3000 mg of acetaminophen in 24 hour period. This total includes the acetaminophen in the pain medication (325 mg) and any Over-The-Counter (OTC) pain medications, cold medications and any other medication that contains acetaminophen. High dosages of acetaminophen can be harmful to the liver and if a person takes too much in a short period of time, they can damage the liver or even die. People who take acetaminophen daily or on a regular basis are also at risk for liver damage.
I think that you need to clarify the order because I can interpret the order two different ways: A: “Give 1 tablet by mouth every 4 hours as needed for pain when pain is rated as 1-5 on a 0-10 pain scale.” B: “Give 1 tablet by mouth every 4 hours as needed when pain is rated as 0-10 on a 0-10 pain scale.”
I had a friend that attempted suicide by ingesting 100 tablets (a whole bottle) of 500 mg tablets of acetaminophen. He damaged his liver so badly that he had to have a liver transplant. He was 18 year old at the time and it took several years for him to get a new liver.
To look at examples of pain scales, “Google search “ for “examples of pain scales” and click on “IMAGES”. There should be images of several different pain scales with and without faces on them.
DNE - Do not exceed
3GM -Maximum dose of 3GM in 24 hours
