My mother is being discharged from the nursing home she is in next Monday which is the 29th of June. Does she get her Social Security check in July? Does she have to resubmit a direct deposit form to Social Security or does it automatically go back to direct deposit for her? Thanks.

Social Security disability, retirement, and auxiliary benefits are paid one month behind – So the June check is sent in July.

SSI - Federal welfare for the disabled and aged - is paid the 1st day of the month for the month of entitlement (unless the 1st falls on the weekend) -so the July ck is paid July1st.

If mother is not discharged until June 29, either way Any payment due her in July is definitely going to go to the facility. Trust me- I go there everyday. :-) The 800# agents at will confirm my earlier advice & instruction as given earlier in this thread.

I think you should even probably get June's check. I'm not sure about it but I do know that if your loved one died on the last day of the month you would have to pay SS back that whole months check. So I would think that they would have to give you the June check since she is moving out on the 29th. You should ask SS. I also know that nothing is automatic, you will have to take the routing number act number and have an account in there name with you named as the representative payee. You have to keep track of what is spent etc.

Paragirl....itgirl ....is probably right about going into SS. Maybe because of where I live, they do things over the phone. Sometimes there are benefits to living out in nowhere....

You & other interested capable parties MUST go to the Social Security administration office to do a payee application for a face to face interview. Take her discharge papers to show that she is released to home as well as proof as to where she will be residing after discharge as her money is to follow her. Also take the routing & account number of a bank account that you have opened for her deposits. Please note -the account must bear both your name & HERS otherwise it will not be accepted as it is HER money. Unless she goes to the office with you for the interview and signs an SSA-4164 in front of them whereby she agrees to have you be payee, it will take AT LEAST two weeks for the payee change to occur. Also note that there are cutoff dates for various systems inputs so depending on the timing, you may not see her payment for 2 months - providing your application is approved. Call the national 800# and give your zip code to find out your local servicing office. 1-800-772-1213. They will verify that my advice is the appropriate course of action.

I agree pargirl....DO NOT sign it over to the nursing home. Pay the bill direct yourself. As for changing the check back to your account, I am sure you need to make the call to Social Security. It is quick and they are very helpful. BUT, go to the nursing home and get a detailed bill of the last month.

I don't know much about Medicaid and since it's the 5th of July I suppose you have already done a lot of the above. When I put my mom in her dementia/alz. facility I wouldn't have thought about consigning the check over to them. It was direct deposited in my dad's account and then HE paid the facility. I would definitely contact SS and bank to have it redirected to her acct. Are you poa or access to her acct?

Check with her bank as to where the checks (direct deposits) are going now, and change them back to her own bank account. Social Security has millions of accounts, so you have to notify them where you want her check deposited.

I assume mom is on Medicaid? If she is discharged, then the nursing home is obligated to give her money back prorated to the day she left. (That's my hunch). If she is on Medicaid, is she still on Medicaid? That is the key question as I see it. Would help to have more info.

Hm-m speak with the social worker and financial person at the nursing home. Upon admission or application for medicaid, I guess some papers were signed to have social security sent to the nursing home. You might also call social security. I would not assume that it would automatically go back to direct deposit.
