My dad--92, living in a nursing home with Azheimer's, dementia, and Parkinson's--has $217.25 coming out of his checking account monthly. There was a phone number and secondary number (perhaps ID or account number) listed, according to the bank, and I wound up speaking to UHC. They could not find an active account in my father's name. I'm now wondering if this money is going to a cancelled/nonexistent account of some sort, and how/if to turn it off. Suggestions?

Call them again and ask what "PPD" means. They should be able to tell you what type of account it is. Next, contact the bank and ask them to research this automatic withdrawal. It is possible that your dad had some sort of a supplemental policy through UHC in the past and someone dropped the ball in getting the withdrawals stopped. It is also possible that someone made a data entry error and the money is coming out of your dad's account to pay for a policy for someone else. Have you found any insurance cards for your dad? Another idea is to contact his doctor to see what insurance information they have on their files. If you are sure that the policy is not for your dad, direct the bank to stop the withdrawals.

So, I managed to track down a cancelled prescription coverage policy, but an active supplemental policy that apparently picks up what Medicare won't cover. So, it sounds like it's worth keeping...

Adam - That sounds about the amount for the supplemental insurance my parents each pay. It's good to have to keep from out of pocket expenses. You didn't state if your dad was on medicaid or just on medicare. I'm sure others will chime in :)

Oh boy....the issues I have had with the billing of UNited Health!!!

Do not even bother to talk to whoever answers the phone. They do not know anything, and they are not allowed access to the billing system! Near as I can figure...they are there to hear you yell and say.."sorry for your inconvience". Nothing else

Demand to talk with the supervisor. I did this..I was on hold for more than an hour..but I was determined!

This guy finally knew something. He spend about 30 minutes digging and finally found the issue. Fixed it...and mailed me a confirmation.

I actually called UHC every month for 3 months before demanding to talk with the supervisor. It was clear by then that nothing short of that was going to work.

Adam, yes, keep that supplement insurance active. You are right, it will pick up what Medicare doesn't cover.

I had a similar issue with my Dad's pharmacy insurance. The insurance kept bouncing from one new company to another. I finally was able to cancel it as Dad was now using the pharmacy insurance offered by the facility.

Once my Dad has passed, I hadn't paid much attention to his checking accounting, then I noticed that United Healthcare was still withdrawing the same monthly fee. I gave them a call, and they said they were never informed that my Dad had passed [which was correct, I had assumed Medicare would notify them], they were real pleasant and would close the account plus send the Estate a check for the months taken out after Dad's death. The check came fairly quickly. Now, I was dealing with the Virginia United Healthcare, each State has their own as the insurance doesn't cross State lines.
